How to wire an LED strip step by step - an expert but simple guide
LED strips are one of the most versatile types of modern lighting. Customers very often ask us " How do I wire an LED strip myself?" or "Can I do it without an electrician?" In most common installations, the answer is yes - as long as you follow a few basic rules.
In this article, we will show you not only the actual wiring procedure, but also the technical context that will help you understand why each step is done.
What will you need to connect the LED strip?
The basic LED system consists of several elements:
- LED strip (12 V or 24 V)
- Power supply (transformer)
- Tape connection - connector or soldering
- Switch/dimmer/controller (optional)
- Aluminium profile (recommended, not mandatory)
- Cover diffuser (recommended, not mandatory)
Never connect the LED strip itself directly to a 230 V mains supply. A suitable power supply must always be used to reduce the voltage to a safe 12 or 24 V.- ILUMIX light expert commentary.

How to wire an LED strip step by step
Measure the length and power of the LED strip
First, measure exactly how many metres of LED tape you will be installing. Each strip is rated in watts per metre (W/m).
Why can't I connect an arbitrarily long LED strip?
Because as the length increases, the voltage decreases and the strip would glow less at the end.- Practical question.
Shorten the LED strip only in the marked areas
LED strips can only be shortened at the marked marks (usually 5 or 10 cm). Shortening outside these points may cause part of the tape to malfunction.
Connecting the LED strip to the power supply
The connection can be made:
- using a quick coupler (a quick but less durable solution)
- or soldering (recommended professional solution)
When soldering, make sure the polarity (+ / -) is correct. Reverse wiring will not destroy the LED strip, but it will not light up.- Expert tip ILUMIX light.
230 V mains connection
Connect the power supply to the mains, ideally via a switch or dimmer. Always test the wiring before final installation.
Final assembly
Glue the LED strip into the aluminium profile, fit the cover and then install it in place.

The most common mistakes when wiring LED strips
-
Underdimensioned resource
-
Wiring without cooling
-
Joining strips in series
A properly wired LED strip has a lifetime of more than 50,000 hours.- Advice from practice.
